1. Not Reading Discover Canada Thoroughly
The test is based entirely on the official Discover Canada study guide. Many candidates skim it once and assume they know enough. Read it cover to cover at least twice, focusing on sections about Canadian history and government structure.
2. Confusing Provincial and Federal Responsibilities
A common trip-up is mixing up which level of government handles what. Healthcare administration, education, and natural resources fall under provincial jurisdiction, while defence, immigration, and criminal law are federal.
3. Overlooking the Rights and Responsibilities Section
Many test-takers focus on history and geography but neglect the rights and responsibilities chapter. Questions about the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, voting rights, and civic duties appear frequently.
4. Ignoring Geography Questions
Knowing the provinces, territories, their capitals, and major geographical features is essential. Don’t skip this, as it often accounts for several questions on the test.
5. Not Practising Under Test Conditions
The real test gives you 30 minutes for 20 questions. That’s plenty of time, but if you’ve never practised with a timer, the pressure can affect your performance. Take at least a few timed practice tests before the real thing.
The Bottom Line
The Canadian citizenship test has a good pass rate, but that shouldn’t make you complacent. With 75% needed to pass (15 out of 20), there’s less margin for error than you might think. Solid preparation makes all the difference.
