Understanding the Test Structure

The Australian citizenship test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. You need to score at least 75% (15 out of 20) to pass. But here’s the critical detail many people miss: you must answer ALL questions about Australian values correctly, regardless of your overall score.

The Values Questions Are Non-Negotiable

This is the single most important thing to understand. Even if you get 19 out of 20 questions right, failing a values question means failing the entire test. The values tested include:

  • Democracy and the rule of law
  • Freedom of speech and religion
  • Equality and the “fair go”
  • Mutual respect and tolerance

Make these your top priority in studying.

Study the Official Resource

All questions come from Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond, specifically the testable section. The Australian Government actually discourages third-party prep materials, but structured practice remains the most effective way to learn.

Take It Seriously: You Only Get Three Attempts

Unlike some other countries’ tests, Australia limits you to three attempts. If you fail all three, your application may be refused, and you’ll need to reapply from scratch. This makes first-time preparation especially important.

Practical Study Tips

  • Start with the values section: get those locked down first
  • Study Australian history from Indigenous peoples through to modern Australia
  • Understand how government works: the role of the Governor-General trips up many candidates
  • Practice regularly rather than cramming. Aim for 20-30 minutes daily over two weeks
